Durbar Square

Lucky we saved this place for Thanksgiving Day for it is a memory like no other that I will always treasure. I had no idea what to expect . We walked from our hotel, about 20 minutes and came upon a land , a kingdom from another time and place. Monumental pagoda- like structures rise up towards the sky that took my breath away. I was transfixed by their splendor and many of the architectural wonders invite you to scale their walls ,with giant steps right up the sides . They are full of people admiring the vista below- the crowds of brightly dressed families, colorful rickshaws circling and motorbikes whizzing by, catching you off guard. Another world is at your feet as you watch the pigeons flutter and cover the entire rooftop scene, filling every nook and cranny. You just can’t believe that this magic land has passed you by and here it is for you to finally gaze upon. We climbed the steps up one tower and looked down at the scene below. I saw a very imposing sculpture of a seated figure- a woman goddess with wings sitting with one leg drawn under her and the other foot was out in front with her knee pointing up.
I have very warm feelings for that seated pose because as a school kid I was obsessed with that same pose. I have to this day no idea where I got that idea from. I was drawing it all over my homework and my notebooks, in the margin area to the left of the blue line. It is a pose I did once in a Kundalini class and never again. And here I am seeing it as a statue. And I feel a deep soul connection to it. The great mystery of life continues to unravel a possible lifetime for me in this part of the world. The day felt like a mystical acid trip that keeps carrying you down the river of delights. We thought we’ seen it all and then we turned a corner onto a plaza the size of a football field full of antiquities merchants – jaw dropping! We climbed 5 flights to a roof top cafe to savor the ecstasy below before we went a browsing at the marketplace.i was reeling at the scale and magic of the place, bought a few items and we wandered away with wings on our heels , knowing we would soon return.
